Helping Fort Worth Drivers Make Informed Decisions Since 1993

Whether your registration renewal is coming up, your vehicle failed an emissions test, or you want a used car checked before buying it, Rick & Ray’s Auto Plaza can help. Our Fort Worth shop brings vehicle inspections and emissions repair together so you can understand the results and address problems that need attention.

Tell us what you need when scheduling. A registration-related emissions test, a pre-purchase inspection, and a general condition check serve different purposes. We’ll help you arrange the appropriate service.

Does Your Vehicle Still Need a Texas Inspection?

Texas ended the safety inspection requirement for noncommercial vehicles on January 1, 2025. However, emissions testing remains required for eligible vehicles registered in Tarrant County.

Gasoline-powered vehicles that are 2 through 24 model years old generally need an annual emissions inspection beginning with their second anniversary. Diesel vehicles, fully electric vehicles, motorcycles, and mopeds are exempt from this emissions requirement.

Commercial vehicles remain subject to safety inspection requirements. Call ahead to confirm whether we can perform the specific inspection your commercial vehicle needs.

A passing emissions test also does not tell you everything about your car’s mechanical condition. If you have concerns about brakes, tires, leaks, or other systems, request a separate vehicle condition inspection.

Emissions Testing and Smog Inspections

Looking for a smog inspection in Fort Worth? Drivers often use “smog check” to describe an emissions inspection.

Texas uses on-board diagnostics, or OBDII, for covered vehicles. The test checks information from your vehicle’s computer, including emissions-related faults and whether its self-checks have run.

An illuminated check engine light or incomplete readiness monitors can prevent a passing result. If the vehicle does not pass, the inspection report helps identify what needs attention before another test.

Failed Your Emissions Test? Start With a Diagnosis

A failed test can leave you wondering how much work your vehicle needs. The next step is to find the cause rather than replace parts based only on a trouble code.

Rick & Ray’s Auto Plaza offers emissions repair for problems affecting your vehicle’s emissions-control systems. Warning signs can include a check engine light, reduced fuel economy, rough running, or unusual fuel odors. These symptoms can have several causes, so testing matters.

Bring your failed inspection report and tell us about recent repairs or battery replacement. Our technicians can review the results, evaluate the problem, and explain recommended repairs.

Pre-Purchase and General Vehicle Inspections

Buying a used car is easier when you understand its condition before committing. A pre-purchase inspection can help identify visible wear, leaks, maintenance needs, and signs of damage that deserve a closer look.

Depending on the inspection selected, checks may include:

  • Tires, brakes, steering, and suspension.
  • Engine-area leaks, fluid condition, and battery condition.
  • Exterior lights, windshield condition, and visible body damage.
  • Interior controls, air conditioning, and other accessible equipment.
  • Vehicle operation during a road test, when appropriate.

A general inspection can also be useful before returning a vehicle to regular use after extended storage. Let us know how long it has been parked and whether you have noticed starting, braking, or handling problems.

An inspection provides a snapshot of the vehicle’s condition. It cannot guarantee that every hidden issue will be found or predict future repairs.

How to Prepare for Your Appointment

Tell us whether you need emissions testing, a used-car inspection, or help after a failed test. Bring any previous inspection report and relevant service records, and ask what documents are needed when scheduling.

Avoid clearing trouble codes or disconnecting the battery just before an emissions test. This can reset readiness monitors, leaving the vehicle unable to complete the inspection successfully.

After certain repairs, the vehicle may need a manufacturer-specific drive cycle before its monitors are ready. There is no single mileage recommendation that works for every vehicle. Ask about readiness before returning for testing.

Vehicle Inspection FAQs

Do Fort Worth drivers still need an annual inspection?

Eligible gasoline-powered vehicles registered in Tarrant County still need annual emissions testing. Texas no longer requires safety inspections for noncommercial vehicles.

Can my car fail if the check engine light is off?

Yes. Incomplete readiness monitors can prevent a passing result even when the light is off, especially after codes were cleared or the battery was disconnected.

Is an emissions test the same as a used-car inspection?

No. Emissions testing checks compliance with the emissions program. A used-car inspection evaluates broader vehicle condition and potential repair needs.

Can you help after a failed emissions test?

Yes. Bring the inspection report so our team can review the results, diagnose the cause, and discuss repairs and next steps.
